Well we have only 28 days left of school. Looking back over this new adventure of teaching full time the growth in my kindergartners has been tremendous. I actually teared up during their concert on Friday. I know they are not my biological kiddos but I still love them just the same. It's been a busy year and I know I still have a lot to learn but overall I've been really happy with this job move. I am missing out on helping my own two boys more often, but have enjoyed watching them become more independent. It's hard to believe we are in the final countdown and I'm definitely looking forward to summer vacation.

Where does time go

It seems like I've been on automatic pilot lately. Just going through the motions of daily life, work, sleep, eat, pick up and drop off the boys from their various activities and now it's February. We did enjoy a much needed snow day today. Zach finally got that back xray that I've had on the refrigerator for over a year and the boys and I ran some errands. Now I'm avoiding working on graduate class number 2 for the year. I solemnly swear I won't wait until my 5 years are up to renewing my teaching certificate next time. Oh well life goes on, back to work tomorrow and the plan to pick Zach up from drivers training. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around him being old enough for drivers training. It just makes me feel old.

Looking forward to a long winters nap

Today I put my 26 kindergarteners on the bus for the last time in 2009. Both they and their teacher were looking forward to having the next two weeks off of school. The last three weeks have been busy with Christmas preparations but we did get to enjoy Thanksgiving in North Carolina on the golf links. The highlight of my trip south was seeing flowers still blooming and the Carolina hotel in Pinehurst decked out for Christmas.

Now I have a couple of days to finish up all of my Christmas preparations at home before we head to Wisconsin for the holidays. The whole family is looking forward to seeing everyone there.

It's been awhile

It's been so long since I've last posted. With the start of school I'm trying to get my bearings with working full time and being mom to my two active boys. Zach played football and he seemed to have fun but still only wants to focus on golf. To help his golf my boys have built a putting green in our backyard. We'll hope it grows better next spring.

Spencer also played flag football and is now in basketball. We seem to never slow down but are definitely looking forward to a little R and R at Thanksgiving.

Growing up

Spencer left Sunday for sleep away camp. Though he was excited to go, when I asked him if he was going to miss us, my sensitive boy got tears in his eyes. I know he's growing up but I'm glad to know he's not so big to miss his mom and dad. It's August and even though I still have four more weeks of summer vacation I'm already gearing up for school. I'm also amazed that my two boys have gotten so big! Where do the years go, it seemed like yesterday they were babies and now one is a teenager about to start his first year in high school and the other will be a middle schooler. Thinking about Zach going to high school is truly overwhelming to me, he will officially have 498 more kids in his class than I did. That in itself freaks me out. What a difference from my 36 kids to his 534 kids. John and I keep talking about what more do we need to do in the raising of that boy because he has only 4 years left under our roof full time. I think both boys are excited about their new adventures and I truly hope they make the most of their school experience.

A tough day for Zach but a proud day for mom and dad

Zach golfed in his final Meijer tour golf tournament yesterday at the Fortress in Frankenmuth. The course is in beautiful shape and we enjoyed walking along. John took the day off so that he could watch so the entire family travelled north for the day. Though the course is in beautiful condition it is by no means easy and Zach struggled all day with both his driver and putter. Even as Zach struggled he kept his range of emotions in check and didn't throw one tiff on the course (a trait he inherited from my family). He truly acted like the young man he is quickly becoming which made both John and I so proud of him. Golf is a funny game, one day things go great the next not so much but being involved in the Meijer tour this year has been a great thing for him.
On the other hand, my goofy Spencer leaves for Camp Michindoh tomorrow. It will be quiet around our house for the week. I hope he has a great time.

Baseball and Golf

Back from vacation and we hit the floor running. Yesterday Spencer had his first playoff game for baseball and we were all excited when they won so now he'll play again tomorrow.Today, Zach competed in his first Meijer Tour golf tourney at the Grosse Ile Country Club, for those of you who golf this course was designed by Donald Ross the same person who designed the famous Pinehurst #2. Though the greens weren't as small as Pinehursts they had a lot of break in them. We were all proud that Zach 2 putted most of the holes, unfortunately his driver was giving him trouble and he shot a 98. Of course after shooting an 89 and 85 in Wisconsin this wasn't nearly good enough but of course mom and Grandma thought he did great. He got to play with his friend Cam which made it a little less nerve racking.

Strawberry Picking

On Thursday the boys and I and our friends the Boehm's went on our annual strawberry picking trip. As Spencer says "it's a tradition" and both boys enjoy the day in the strawberry fields. This year the berries were big and juicy. We ended up picking 14 and 1/2 pounds.Zach and our bounty of berries

A new member of the family

Yesterday we welcomed a new member to our family, an eight week old calico kitten who we have finally named Dottie. Her name took us a bit but the naming of the pets has always been delegated to hubby John. Last night the boys thought Bethpage was a great name in keeping with the love of golf that our family has. For those of you who are not golfers, Bethpage is where the US Open is being played this year. Well today after watching some of the golf tourney, John heard one of the announcers Dottie Pepper speak and thought that Dottie might just be the perfect name for her. I of coursed liked it more than Bethpage but Spencer thought it seemed like an old grandma name but decided that Dottie would be just fine. She is becoming more comfortable with all of us and is so much fun to play with and watch as she runs all over the place. So far it seems that she likes to be around us as whenever we walk out of the room she cries until she's found us.

Today we attended Zach's eighth grade promotion, I hate to be one of those moms who brag excessively about my kids but I just have to brag a little. It seems like it was just yesterday that I was worrying about Zach entering the big bad middle school and just like that I blink and we're now preparing for high school. Zach has grown so much in the last three years not only physically but emotionally. Overall I think he would say the middle school experience was mostly positive. Today during promotion Zach was honored with several awards which demonstrated his involvement in middle school.

Mom of course was forbidden from going in front to take pictures of him as one never wants to be embarrassed by mom. Thank goodness for my new camera's zoom.

School is almost out

Here we are in the final week of school for me and final 7 days for the boys. I'll sure be glad when I can maybe sleep in a bit. We've been busy with 5th grade activities for Spencer and preparing for the big 8th grade promotion for Zach. Spencer's 5th grade party was a cruise theme. Lots of fun had by all.

I know, I know, it's been way too long since I last blogged. Life just seems to get really crazy for me in the spring time. Anyway I'll try to catch up from my last blog entry.

April: We spent a wonderful week in North Carolina with my mom and sister. They left April 2nd in the am from Wisconsin and we left in the afternoon. We actually were able to meet up at the hotel in Mount Hope West Virginia that evening to enjoy a late dinner with them. The next day we headed into North Carolina and took our annual detours to visit a few wineries before heading to Seven Lakes our final destination. We enjoyed great weather while we were there. We golfed, went pottery shopping, visited the North Carolina Aviation museum, played lots of card games and just enjoyed spending time with each other.

John told Spencer that if he hit the 100 yd marker, he'd buy him a Gatorade at the turn. Can't come much closer than that.

Once our vacation ended baseball and golf season started for the boys which keep us running. May has just flown by with practices, games and many school events. It seems like school districts forget that things need to be done so they cram in all kinds of activities during the months of May and June. Both boys this year were honored with academic achievement awards. Both John and I are very proud of their hard work.

Now here we are in June. Where does time go to. It seems like I haven't quilted in months. So I'm looking forward to summer vacation to do so. I have my nieces wedding quilt to get done and always an abundance of other projects. I'll also spend my summer planning for the next school year as I have decided to make a change. My dear hubby gently mentioned that it might be time to move from part-time to full-time and after lots of thought and prayer on the subject I bid this week on a kindergarten position in my district and will be teaching that in the fall. My boys are growing up so fast but they're to the point that they don't need mom at home during the day so much just in the evenings when they themselves are home from school. Spencer will move to the middle school and Zach who I can't believe (where has time gone) turned 14 on Friday and will be beginning the adventure of high school in the fall. I'm sure I'll have to be much better at time management next year and will actually need to plan our dinner meals ahead of time but the change will be exciting. I have taught Special Education my entire career and now I move to a regular education class but preschool to kindergarten isn't a too big of jump and next year will definitely be one of learning for me also. I'm sad to leave the wonderful girls I've worked with but am glad that I'm still in the same building and will be able to continue seeing them now on a daily basis. My brain has been working a mile a minute as I prepare to make this change. I'm utilizing the fine art of list making, something I've done for years but at this time my lists seem very long and number many.

On Friday will enjoy one of Spencer's last hurrahs of elementary school, his 5th grade party and then on the 16th we'll enjoy attending Zach's 8th grade promotion before ending the school year, then summer vacation will officially start. We have plans to spend some time in Wisconsin with the family and enjoying the warm weather.

My Baby is 11 today

It's hard to believe that my Spencer is 11 today. It seems just like yesterday when I held him in my arms for the first time. Though I can no longer hold him like I did when he was a baby, I feel fortunate that he still enjoys hugs from both mom and dad. Birthdays are always a great time to reflect on the past year. I see Spencer becoming more mature each day. I can really tell that middle school is just around the corner. During this past year Spencer continued to be active in sports and to both his dad's and my pleasure he's really shown an interest in golf. He was also involved in Lego league this year which helped his math and science skills. I've also seen a tremendous growth in his confidence with writing. Of course with all the growth comes some things that mom and dad aren't quite pleased with particularly a sassy mouth but taming this is a work in progress. I truly am proud of how he is growing overall.

News update

Now that we're back from vacation I thought it was time to post an update as to what's going on in our household. We all enjoyed our trip to North Carolina. The weather wasn't shorts weather but we were able to golf comfortably in long sleeves and pants a few days. Zach carded his first birdie on the par 5 16th hole of Beacon Ridge (the course we belong to down in NC) He shot a 43 for the back nine that day. He was very excited and is trying hard to make the high school golf team next year. John and I spent part of the week looking at houses as a possible investment property We're leaning toward one but need to spend a bit more time crunching the numbers.

On the quilting front during our drives to and from North Carolina I was able to finish up the binding on three quilts. Both boys have waited patiently for their quilts and they were immediately put on their beds when we returned home. The Hungry Caterpillar quilt will spend some time at school in the spring for the kids to enjoy while we read the story.

Ready for a vacation

We've been blessed to have a few days that haven't been sub zero but it makes me want to see spring even sooner. We're looking forward to a week in North Carolina, hopefully we can get some golf in and relax under those Carolina blue skies. I'm also hoping to finish up three quilts. All have been quilted and are ready for the hand sewing part of the binding. I'll post pictures when they're finished.

Last week I went to the scheduling meeting for Zach to go to high school. It's so hard to believe that he's going to be in high school. It just seems like yesterday that he started kindergarten. Kiddos sure do grow up fast.

Start your Engines

This week marks our final Cub Scout pinewood derby. The actual race is tomorrow. We usually have a slow car but thanks to Spencer's creative mind we get extra points for style. In the past we've done a Star Wars speeder car, A Packer Golf Cart, A block of gold, and a bowling alley. The golf cart and bowling alley won the award Car of the Year. This is voted on by the kids in the elementary school. This year's car is no less creative. Spencer decided he wanted to do a guitar. After many hours of work put in by both hubby John and Spencer the car is complete.

On the quilting front I have 3 quilts pinned and one to go so hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can dramatically shorten my quilts to complete list.

I have been able to get some quilting in since returning from Christmas. I completed last week's block the Ribbon Star.I also finished Spencer's quilt top but haven't taken any pictures yet of that, worked on my window treatments, and finally finished this weeks block Sawtooth Star.

No Excuses

Since I'm enjoying the day off due to the extremely cold weather in Michigan, I have no excuses but to update my blog. We enjoyed a wonderful two weeks in Wisconsin for the holidays, or should I we enjoyed ourselves once we actually arrived safe and sound. Our usual 7 hour trip to my moms took 10 and the 3 hour trip it John's moms took 5. It never ceases to amaze me how fast people drive in snowy and icy conditions. We witnessed many cars in the ditch during our travels. It's always a lot of fun to spend time with our families. We were able to see all the sisters, brother in laws, nieces and nephews. We spend two days at the farm which is always a hit and really spent some good quality time with everyone. I've attached a few pictures from Christmas.

We always love to go home to Wisconsin, but it's also nice to get back into the routine of things at home.

Tonight I had many good intentions to update my blog unfortunately I ended up having to redo my entire blog. I thought I would like to get a Valentine's background from my favorite background site, but they were down due to server problems, so I did a quick search, thinking I could find another site. Yes there are plenty of sites but not as user friendly as Cutest Blogs on the Block and I proceeded to change things I shouldn't have losing all my information. Needless to say I just spent the last hour updating things I think I had on my blog and not posting much. Serves me right for going around changing things that I don't know too much about. My next post will have to be an update of what's going on in my life.

Too Busy to Blog

It's been a long time since my last post. It seems like we got home to Michigan from Wisconsin after Thanksgiving. Now we'll be heading back in just a few short days. Lately I've been baking. It's become somewhat of a tradition that I bake, bake and bake some more during the holidays. I've finished all of my sewing and shopping and now just have to wrap presents. This years sewing project were grocery bags. Doing my part to save our planet. I did get one quick picture of the boys by the Christmas tree. We're looking forward to seeing our family over the holidays and wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

A quilt retreat weekend

Got back on Sunday from my first quilt retreat. My dear hubby, still can't believe I stayed up so late, or should I say early, both nights there. Wonders never cease, I'm usually an early to bed kind of gal but was working on a project and enjoying the girls. I did finish the last of my red and white swap blocks and they have been sent on to Kentucky. I'm really looking forward to receiving all of the many blocks from around the globe back.

I also finished the main part of a fun fall quilt while at my retreat. I still need to add borders then quilt it but received a lot of postive feedback and great ideas from the other ladies in attendance. Thanks to Shelley for sending some pictures of me working on this quilt.

I definitely would like to go on a retreat again. I was just amazed to see the beautiful work that the others worked on. It was a fun weekend to just sew, the weather was yucky anyway, so what better thing could I have done and my boys at home survived without me unscathed. They're usually pretty independent but I like to think that I'm needed anyway.

I Can't believe I haven't had a post in so long

Wow, does time fly. I know I've been busy but when I logged on tonight I found out just how long it's been since my last post. Life never seems to slow down, but I guess if it did I wouldn't know what to do with myself. My oldest just finished his middle school football team and now moves onto basketball.

Zach played quarterback some of the time which he just loved. Spencer is gearing up for his big Lego League competition. His team had a practice last Saturday and now knows what work need to be done by next week. He was setting the robot up to complete the mission in this picture.

I myself are looking very much forward to a quilt retreat this weekend. Having the whole weekend to sew will be just wonderful.

Indian Summer

I just love Indian Summer weekends. We just had a beautiful sunny and warm weekend. I spent some time getting my garden ready for winter on Saturday and then yesterday instead of enjoying the weather outside I spent much of the day inside helping Spencer get his cake ready for the Cub Scout Cake Auction which takes place tonight. I thought we picked an easy cake but let me just say those pre made gingerbread (or haunted house in our case) kits aren't so easy. Spencer wanted a halloween themed cake and I think we did a pretty good job with it. We'll see tonight how much it goes for.

My how time flies

Yesterday was my sister's 47th birthday. I still think it's unreal to think that we're as old as we are. On Monday I'll turn 44. It sure seems that our parents were so old when we were kids and they were our age. I'm sure that's what my boys think now though I don't feel old at all.

The above picture is from last year when my family was home in Wisconsin to celebrate our birthdays. That doesn't happen too often.

This weeks Block of the Week

I was able to finish the block of the week today. I enjoyed working on this block since it is one of my Red and White swap blocks. Made some mistakes on the block but now know what I need to do differently for the swap blocks.

I have now completed block number two for my block exchange. 2 more times 11 blocks each and I'll be ready to send them on. I'm looking forward to receiving lots of different red and white blocks. I think they will make a stunning quilt.

Well as usual, a busy life gets in the way of other things such as blogging. I am the spirit wear chairperson for my older son's middle school and this week as my husband puts it our house has turned into a wharehouse of sweatshirts and t-shirts. I have been busy packing all of the orders into as many plastic grocery bags as I can scrounge up. My coworkers are now calling me the bag lady and have donated a fair amount to my collection. Thought I'd share a few pictures of my now wharehouse living room. Thankfully all this stuff will go to there own homes next

week.

First Red and White Swap blocks done

I was finally able to get to the sewing machine this week and since the block of the week was B-4 I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to work on that block for the red and white swap.

First I finished the block for this weeks BOW.

Then I completed all 10 plus one more for me in red and white. Now I have only 3 more blocks to make for the swap.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Well one week of school is under our belt. Today went better then last week so it should only continue to be easier. I'm really enjoying my two classes this year and hope to have a lot of fun with them. Unfortunately I haven't had much time for anything else. We did fit in a weekend trip to Wisconsin for Labor day and this weekend my boys are looking forward to the annual city festival here in Michigan. I'm hoping to fit in a bit of time for quilting tomorrow on my day off.

Last Summer vacation

We spent the early part of the week on a last summer fling. We drove down to North Carolina through the great Smoky Mountains and into North Carolina. The boys of the family even slid down a waterfall. The weather in the mountains was a bit too cool for me but I really enjoyed hiking to several beautiful waterfalls. After entering North Carolina we drove over to the central part of the state know as the Sandhills and got some golf and more swimming in. All in all it was a great trip.

Back to school

Here it is August 13th and those of you are teachers are feeling just like me. How did summer pass us up so fast? Why didn't I get everything accomplished that I wanted to? But, alas August has arrived along with all of the back to school sales you'll see teachers in their classrooms preparing for another school year. Today my boys and I spent the morning and part of the afternoon in my classroom with my co-teachers. We totally revamped one of our two classrooms and I'm excited to see how everything flows. We seem to start every year with a full class of toddlers that grow into preschoolers throughout the year and this year is no exception. Job boredom is rarely the case. So we'll enjoy our last couple of weeks of summer laziness and begin the new school refreshed and ready.

A break from quilting

Yesterday, I took a break from quilting and took my boys to the PGA championship practice round. This tournament is being played at a beautiful course very near to our home. The boys wanted to spend most of the day on driving range collecting autographs but my older son took advantage of a junior clinic with one of the pros coaches. He even made the local paper here.

Latest projects

With wedding quilts out of the way I thought I'd work on a few UFO's, namely my two sons quilts. They've been waiting for two years so it might be a good thing to get those finished. My older sons is teal, purple and black. I still need to add a small purple border, small black border and a large ribbon material border but hopefully I can finish the top this week.

My younger sons quilt is orange, yellow and black. His may take me longer to finish as the border is pieced but should look pretty good when it's done.

Quilting progress

Well after returning from vacation I did find a bit of time to work in some quilting. My DH says I lead the life of leisure in the summer and have spent a few days swimming this week with my boys, but a good week for me includes some time quilting. I finished this weeks SBS BOW and spent some time on my son Zach's quilt but couldn't resist cutting out part of my Very Hungry Caterpillar quilt. I think that quilt will go to school with me next spring when we study bugs with the kids.

A SBS Milestone

With the completion of this weeks SBS block I am officially half way done. I hope to make steady progress over the summer but will take a week off while we head to Wisconsin for a family vacation and nephew's wedding. I put the last stitches in the wedding batik binding last night so it is ready to be packed.

It's been such a busy time for me that there hasn't been enough time to post on my blog or quilt. I have been able to finish quilting my nephew's wedding quilt and the binding is partially sewn on. Now I just need to do the hand stitching. I might just finish that on the car ride to Wisconsin. I'm truly glad that I and my boys have finished another school year. My quilting area is a mess so that's on the agenda for today, once I get that cleaned up I need to catch up on some SBS BOW's and start on the red and white swap. Now that summer vacation is here I'll be more on top of the blog and will post pictures soon.

New block and fun news

Well, between planting flowers and going to my boys baseball games I had the chance to finish this weeks SBS block.

Last night I had the special treat. I had dinner with Jennifer Chiaverini and fellow SBS member Shelley Stevens. Afterward, Shelley and I along with a large group of women listened to Jennifer at the Baldwin Library in Birmingham, Mi. It was truly a great evening.

Had a chance to finish this weeks SBS block. It was much easier thanks to Micki in Ireland who sent me her paper piecing pattern.

Progress

I've made some nice progress on my nephew's wedding quilt. I have 3 more rows left then borders, quilting and binding. Hopefully I'll finish it by the big day in June. You can see the first two rows here. I'm really loving the batiks, this quilt is different then the norm for me since I tend to do most quilts in green. I've also attached a better picture of the inner part of my lollipop quilt. Thanks to some great SBS quilters who gave me applique pointers, I finished two stems last night. Will post the applique portion of this quilt as I progress more.

Today's projects

Today I had the chance to complete my SBS block of the week. It's a bit crooked but I finally gave up after taking out many seams.

I also worked a bit more on my lollipop flowers quilt. I have the center portion finished and now need to cut out the outer edge and lollipop flowers for applique. As usual whenever I try to take a picture of one my quilting projects I have help from my dear kitty Minnie Pearl.

I do wish I had time to work on the Quiltville Mystery quilt but maybe the next one I'll be able to do.

A Sunday Spent Sewing

What a great day I spent sewing. I've finished the 20 sister's choice blocks for my nephew's wedding quilt. I'm about half the way done with the coordinating Marion's Choice blocks. Since I made such good progress on the wedding quilt I took a bit of a break to redo this weeks SBS block with the paper piecing method and finished the middle rows of the Moda Posh lollipop flowers quilt. I've attached some pictures of my nephew's quilt block and the new SBS block.

A cold Saturday in Michigan

Well we thought spring was here but unfortunately we were wrong. It's a good day to stay inside to quilt and work on projects around the house.

A visit with a new friend

I had the privilege to meet one of my fellow SBS quilters today. Shelley and I met at Guildcrafters in Berkley. We spent some time exploring the shop and had a wonderful lunch. Thanks for a great day Shelley. I'm off to sew now.

Wedding quilts

My gift to my neices and nephews as they get married is a quilt. This is the fourth quilt I've finished and it's been fun to see how different they all can be. My niece Natasha once told me that her favorite color for decorating was burgandy. I kept that in mind when I made the quilt for Natasha and her new husband Jason. The wedding is next weekend, but unfortunately she'll have to wait until June to receive this quilt.
